My daughter, also known as "The Diva Child" and her boyfriend returned from Wisconsin safely this weekend and they brought "the boy's" dog home with them...his name is Razor and he makes about four of Delilah.

Despite our initial trepidation, they are getting along VERY well...though Miss Delilah doesn't exactly like sharing her toys!

Today's Monday Man segment is a bit late - mainly because I was having computer issues, and also because I just couldn't decide WHO to feature. Then I saw Sir Roger Moore on The View and his interview was followed by a commercial for the new James Bond movie staring Daniel Craig as James Bond, so I took that as a "sign." (LOL)

So, today's Monday Man is a compilation - The actors who have played Ian Fleming's character, James Bond.

Here they are, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig - Bond, James Bond. (grin) And, yes, I know that's not the correct order of their appearance as James Bond - deal! (LOL)

All Soul's Day

Well, here it is, the day after Halloween. It's All Soul's Day, folks. This is important, especially to me, because it's the day that my first story with Amber Quill Press starts on. Yes, Tales from the Graveyard Shift: Ghouls starts on All Soul's Day and goes from there with appropriately ghoulish delights. (LOL).

It's also November 1, and that means it's NANOWRIMO time. Have you ever done this? The idea is that you write every single day during the month of November, and if you write at least 16,667 words a say, by the end of November you'll have a 50K word novel. Works in theory, but I've never managed to actually make that goal. Life usually interferes in more ways than one.

I'm going to give it another shot this year, though, and we'll see how far I get.

Before I do that, however, I'm going to go see what's left in the candy bowl from all the little ghosties and goblins who came knocking at my door last night and pick out my favorite candies for consumption when the Muse deserts me.

Enjoy your fall, don't overindulge in those sweet treats, read a good ghost story, and don't forget to turn back your clocks tonight.

Today's Monday Man is a very versatile actor - he's been in movies and on TV in several series for several different networks. According to IMDB, he was born in England and raised in Australia, but I can't recall hearing him speak with anything other than an American-sounding accent.

His most recent TV show paired him up with another hottie, Wentworth Miller. Oh, what the heck, why not do another two-fer.

Yup, I'm talking about Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller, two of the stars of Prison Break.

New Addition to the Family

We have a new addition in our family...

Last week my daughter and her boyfriend went to the local Humane Society and looked at all the puppies and kitties. Last Saturday, we went together and filled out the paperwork to adopt a lovely little puppy named Delilah. She's a Welsh Corgi Mix - or so the label on her cage said. She had surgery on Wednesday (so there won't be any little Delilahs running around), and we were able to bring her home Wednesday night.

She's a little love and has already settled into the family very well. Though this isn't the best picture, may I introduce you to Delilah? She was still a little woozy from the anesthetic when this picture was taken, but today she was more lively and had to greet everyone for pats and kisses.

What can I say, life interferred with my post yesterday. So, instead of putting up a Monday Man, I'll put up a Monday Man on Tuesday. (grin)

Today's Monday Man is actually a Tuesday Two-Fer (you know what that is, right? Two for the price of one(grin)).

Because I've admitted in the past to being a reality TV show junkie, this Two-fer should come as no surprise...My two-fer is Jeff Probst and Phil Koeghan the hosts of Survivor and The Amazing Race. They're snarky when necessary, they're compassionate, they encourage and commiserate with the contestants, and they've both got great smiles (and Jeff has GREAT dimples)!

Today's Monday Man is in honor of one of the silver screen's most enduring hunks...the one and only Paul Newman. He made women of all ages swoon throughout his career with just one glance from those baby blues. With his passing last Friday, he left behind a wife of 50 years and their three daughters as well as two daughters from his first marriage. My condolences to the Newman Family and for your consideration, some pictures of Paul Newman throughout his career.

Today's Monday Man comes from one of my new favorite TV shows - have you seen Burn Notice? It's all about a CIA agent who gets his cover blown. The first show hooked me and I eagerly set my DVR to record the whole season. Now, whenever I need my Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) fix, I can get it.

He's smart, he's sexy, he's darn good with things that go "boom," and I adore that grin! Plus, his interaction with his mother, his pal Sam and his ex-girlfriend Fiona are fabulous!!

Hmmm...Okay, I'm totally beat. RWA's (that's Romance Writers of America for those who don't know (grin)) was last week and I got home on Sunday...I'm putting this post together while I wait for my laundry to finish so I can go to bed so I can be halfway intelligent at the day job tomorrow.

Because I'm too tired to even LOOK for the remote, I just have the TV on the same channel it was on when I turned it on...the movie Doom is playing, so for this Monday Man, I pick KARL URBAN.

He's great in those intense roles (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Chronicles of Riddick, Doom, The Bourne Supremacy(I think that's right...), etc.), and in TV roles as well (Cupid & Julius Caesar in the Xena series - and I think he was another character as well, but I'm too tired to look it up(grin)).

No, seriously. It seems like it was just last week that I got word that I was one of the winners of the Amber Heat contest - then it had to have been just a few days ago that I got my edits (thrilled to say ONE round of edits, thank you very much!) - and now it's just over a month to my first release!

WOW!

I've ordered some promo stuff and will start sending that out soon - I'm also trying to figure out what other promo materials I can use to promote my "brand." AND...I really, really want to finish this next story. I've been kind of stuck on it, but I think I've figured out exactly what needs to happen, so I'm moving on.

Promo & Signature Lines

So, I've been thinking about Promo and what I need to do to make my book successful. I've about decided that I know nothing about true promotion.

Sure I can blog about my book and send out emails with the title of my book and links to my publisher on them, but who really reads those signature lines?

I've seen several authors who use just their name and a link to their website and others who have pretty much every book they've sold to every publisher they've sold to along with release dates and a tagline and their website address...which is more effective?

I don't know, but I do know that I don't read every line of the latter ones. I've been told that 'backlist' is key...but if this is your first sale, you don't HAVE backlist.

Anyway, I'm kinda stuck in my current story, so I think I'm really just looking for excuses not to write...well, that and I need to come up with a really great blog for my day at the RomEroticaWriters blog (http://romeroticawriters.blogspot.com/) since that's "looming" on the horizon.

Speaking of signature lines - I have a website - check it out: www.kaceysmith.com (designed by my BFF) - I really hope you'll take a look at some of the photos there - I plan to use some of them in my promo (g).

In the meantime, I'll keep trying to write: Erotica that Fires the Imagination. I'll keep posting at RomEroticaWriters the 30th of every month. I'll update this blog as the occasion and/or my imagination warrants, and I'll continue writing.

Editing and editors...

When writers put words to paper, we're all convinced that we're writing the best possible story we can. Then we sell it and get an editor who shows us (hopefully) how much BETTER the story can become.

A good editor will build you up while he/she's telling you what you're doing wrong in your story. A good editor will repeatedly tell you how much he/she LOVES your story.
A good editor will only make your story that much stronger and that much better for your readers.

I've truly been blessed with an amazing editor who pointed out my weaknesses in a way that didn't make me feel like a total dork. She also praised my story, my characters, and my voice. The best part for me were the little side comments that had absolutely nothing to do with editing, but were just snippets she threw in (i.e., "I adore her!" when speaking about my heroine).

Now that I've finished my edits, I realize what a difficult job she has - and how much I truly appreciate her. So, Thanks, LA - You're AWESOME!!

A Masterpiece? Well...not quite...

All writers believe in their works. If they didn't they wouldn't try to get them pubilshed. All writers believe that their story, their creative genius, their words of wisdom should be shared with the masses.

Should they? Well, that's a very subjective call, isn't it?

I wholeheartedly agree that it is a shame that some authors will never be published - they really are writing "hidden" masterpieces. I also believe that some people who DO get published have no business being published by anyone. Their prose stinks, their plots are weak, their characters are underdeveloped, their writing is mundane...and yet...someone pays them for those books and they are PUBLISHED AUTHORS. (We won't even go into the whole vanity-press thing here.)

Which am I? Well, I hope I'm not a talentless hack. I'd like to think that people will enjoy my works of fiction. I think I can entertain and amuse with my writing - at least I make myself grin from time to time (and my editor seems to like the majority of my story[g]). I DO have issues with repeating words, but I'm working on that.

Thoughts? Have you ever read a book and wondered what the editor was drinking when they agreed to buy that book? Have you ever read a manuscript and wondered what the editors are smoking when they don't buy the book? I really would like to know...

Writing and Life

Writers, especially romance/erotica writers, are often asked, "Where do you get your ideas? Are they based on personal experience?"

Honey, let's talk...

Do you HONESTLY believe someone could have all the sexual adventures we write about and still be able to walk upright? Look their parent/sibling/(and in some cases) spouse or significant other in the eye? Talk to people they went to high school with without blushing? Of course, there may be some who COULD, but I promise you, I'm not one of them.

My ideas come from the world around me - with a twist. You see, the sky in my world is a lovely shade of purple. I have a very vivid imagination and a very adventurous spirit. That's why I can write comfortably about things I will (more than likely) never experience, yet make you believe those things have happened...to someone else, of course.

I see a picture or a couple, or even two people separately and start to imagine them in various situations. What if...

WHAT IF is a writer's friend. What if she loves him, but he loves someone else? What if he secretly wants her but she thinks of him as a friend? What if they grew up together, experimented as teens, drifted apart and then come back together after a tragedy? What if they never parted, but one of them has started to secretly yearn for someone else?

All of those scenarios are ones I've read about. Some of them, I've even put a twist on and written myself.

My first release with Amber Quill Press contains a ménage à trois - a true one. Each of the three people has sex with the others one-on-one and as a group. Have I ever lived that? No, but I often wondered about it...did I ever suggest it to a significant other? Yes, but it never evolved. (this is called baring one's soul, and could be very dangerous{grin})

I hope you will read it and enjoy the love story, because ultimately, that's what it's about. A LOVE story that just happens to involve three consenting adults.

That's Gaelic for "Are you drunk yet?"

I'm not, and it's not only because of the day job. Yes, I celebrate my Irish Heritage today (along with many others, some of whom are about as Irish as my desk), but I don't go out with the intent to get drunk.

I'll lift a pint of Guinness or have a small glass of Bushmills or Jamison's, and with the American Irish influence, I'll be cooking corned beef, cabbage & potatoes to go with the Soda Bread, but that's not really the focus of this day, is it? The Irish have observed this day for thousands of years - here in America the celebrations started in 1737, and the first parade was in 1762...but it's always been around St. Patrick's birth(and some believe death)date.

One blog I read asked people to mention their favorite Irish Actors/Musicians/Writers. The Musician part was easy for me - Gaelic Storm - they are my all-time favorite Irish group. I heard a new one a few weeks ago at the Dallas Irish Fest - Town Pants - okay, so they're not "new," just "new to me."

So, what's your favorite St. Patrick's Day tradition? Do you dress in Green? Wear your "Kiss me, I'm Irish" button or t-shirt? Do you sport a shamrock? Will you be partaking of any green beer or other festive drinks tonight? Is the corned beef cooked & waiting to be consumed?

It's a fun holiday, so celebrate it!

Waiting and waiting...

One of the things I've noticed about writing and trying to sell a story is that writers do a lot of waiting.

We wait for "the perfect" story line to come to us. We wait for that brilliant flash of inspiration to strike so we can get the right words down on paper. We wait for our critique partners to get back to us with ways we can improve our stories. We wait for the "perfect" opportunity to send our story to the "perfect" editor or agent. We wait for that editor/agent to get back to us to tell us how wonderful our story is and how much they want to buy it/represent us. (or not {LOL}).

Still...we wait.

Waiting is not easy for anyone. It's especially not easy when it comes down to waiting for a contract or a review.

With the contract, your anticipation levels are high because you just want to hold proof in your hands that someone loved your story as much as you did and they actually offered you a chance to share that story with readers. You can't wait to read the contract, see in print, proof that you didn't dream that phone call or email, that someone IS actually going to put your book in print.

With reviews...well, I don't know, quite honestly. I've never actually had one, but I'm already anticipating it. Will the reviewer LIKE my story? Will she give it a good review, or will she trash it? That, frankly, scares me to death!

Waiting is never easy, but I'm really wondering if it's the WAIT or the ANTICIPATION that truly makes you crazy?

I'd planned to try to keep this blog up a bit better, but, well, life got in the way.

Exciting news to share: I'M ONE OF THE WINNERS OF THE AMBER QUILL HEAT WAVE CONTEST!!

Yes, a novella I wrote will be one of seven out of over 200 that is going to be printed. I'm on my way to being a published erotica author and I couldn't be happier!

The books at Amber Quill Press are great - I've been reading them for a couple of years now - and I think I'm going to be very happy being part of their published group.

The story I wrote is a contemporary Paranormal with magic and snark. It features a menage a trois, so won't be everyone's cuppa, but that's okay - I thoroughly enjoyed writing it and am looking forward to writing more stories in the same vein (no pun intended, though there ARE vampires in the story as well).

That's the news. I'll be blogging more frequently as I get more details.

Still pursuing the dream...

Okay, so I didn't make the cut in agent Nathan Bransford's contest for first pages - http://www.nathanbransford.blogspot.com/ - somehow I'm not surprised. He doesn't really represent romance or erotica, so it doesn't come as a shock. Still, the entries chosen represent an interesting mix of styles and even while some of them break "the rules" I've been taught.

I'm still waiting to hear from the publisher-sponsored contest I entered and in the interim, I'm preparing query letters, continuing to write and plot other stories and working on setting up a web presence.

I'll continue until I reach the goal of publication - and then I'll sigh happily and keep on writing!

I've taken steps to fulfill my dream.

I've entered my novella in a publisher-sponsored contest and I've entered the first page in agent Nathan Bransford's contest for first pages...(http://www.nathanbransford.blogspot.com/).

I don't want to sit back and whine about chasing my dream, I want to go out there, grab it by the tail and wrestle it into submission!

Ah...the joys, thrills and spills of a hopeful writer pursuing a publishing career.
